Take Action Now! Restore Catholic school funding. The state has
shortchanged Catholic schools.
While state lawmakers continue to negotiate a state budget, Governor
Paterson has now recommended an additional cut to Catholic school reimbursement. The Senate Democrats propose to
eliminate the Comprehensive Attendance Policy (CAP) program entirely, thus cutting off $55 million in future years' budgets.
While the Assembly leadership appears willing to accept the Governor's recommended 50% cut to CAP, they are willing
to reimburse religious and independent schools in the 12 counties in and around New York City for the $6 million cost
of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) payroll tax imposed on our schools in that area. Your action
is needed urgently and immediately to stop these proposed cuts to Catholic schools. Please take
a moment to urge Gov. Paterson and your state legislators to preserve the CAP program and to exercise fairness in
its treatment of Catholic schools, which are facing cuts in reimbursement for mandated services for the third time this year.
